How Summer Camps for Teens Develop Leadership Skills

How Summer Camps for Teens Develop Leadership SkillsParents are often surprised at how much their kids can change over a single summer at camp.

Many teens begin the summer shy and a little nervous about going away to camp.

But they tend to go home with a newfound sense of confidence that they carry with them when it is time to go back to school.

One of our goals every summer is to see each kid gain new leadership skills.

We make this happen by providing a variety of activities that touch upon the basic components of what it takes to be a leader in their community.

Develop Conflict Resolution Skills

A good leader knows how to turn any conflict into a win-win situation for everyone involved. Life at camp is mostly full of positive moments, but there are occasional conflicts that arise anytime teens live closely together for a summer.

With help from their counselors, teens learn how to work out conflicts, such as who needs to help clean up their bunk.

The conflict resolution skills that teens learn at camp helps them learn how to help others work out their differences when they are leading a group.

Boost Confidence Through Taking Risks

Leaders must also be confident enough to take on their roles. At our camp, we encourage kids to take safe risks that build their confidence.

Learning how to do a flip on the trampoline or a trick on waterskis gives teens the knowledge that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to do.

Observe Leadership From Positive Role Models

We take pride in hiring the best people to join our staff. Many of our coaches and camp counselors have worked with teens for years.

Each member of our team also undergoes specific training regarding how to help teens develop their leadership abilities.

Watching our staff is truly inspiring, and teens learn many leadership skills through observing their actions.

Participate in Public Performances

How Summer Camps for Teens Develop Leadership Skills

Leaders need to feel confident in front of a crowd. This is why we plan several events over the course of a summer that gives teens a chance to practice their public performance skills.

Family days are one example of opportunities that teens have to show off what they have been practicing all summer.

They also get to perform in talent shows, camp competitions and other fun events that the campers plan on their own.

Get Actual Experience Being a Leader

Our campers often plan and execute their own activities with the help of our staff. Your teen may be called upon to be captain of a team during one of our competitions.

They may also be asked to step in as a leader when they are working with younger campers.

We encourage teens to look for opportunities to step up and contribute to our camp community. We also let teens know when we see them make positive decisions that help the entire group.

At Adventure Island, we believe that every camper has what it takes to become a leader. While it doesn’t happen overnight, we do see teens become leaders over the course of a summer.

In fact, we often welcome back former campers as counselors who take the lead in our daily activities. It’s always exciting to see just how much each teen changes as they visit us each summer.
